Story guide

In a cave-like place, Chiikawa, Hachiware, and Usagi face the large one-eyed Ode. Bread and other food sit before Ode, who holds and eats it while the three watch from some distance. The scene does not immediately explain who Ode is or why they are together. Ode does not appear only threatening, but seems to enjoy the food, while the three carefully take in what they see. The dark cave and bright food colors place uncertainty about a possibly dangerous figure beside an odd sense of familiarity around a meal.

Inside a cave, Chiikawa, Hachiware, Usagi, and Ode are captured by a group of Goblin. Carrying club-like objects, the Goblin bind the trio and Ode with rope- and basket-like restraints and try to carry them deeper inside. Chiikawa and the others have no opportunity to search for an escape route, and even Ode's large body is restrained. The situation abruptly reverses from one in which food lay before them to one in which they are under someone else's control. The Goblin offer no detailed explanation and continue the work of transporting their captives, so what they want remains unknown. Having the three small characters and the large Ode restrained alike creates the fear that a difference in size offers no safety.

Chiikawa, Hachiware, Usagi, and Ode are made to wear black-and-white striped clothes and placed in a prison surrounded by stone walls. Ode sits with their large body while the three gather nearby and take in where they are. Ode shows that they know something about a mushroom they ate before, explaining that they were captured for eating a mushroom Goblin had valued. A large barred structure makes their confinement clear. Goblin's purpose and their treatment remain unknown, while the repeated stripes and stone walls create the pressure of a space much harder to leave than the cave of meals and conversation.

Outside the prison, Goblin opens something like a cookbook and turns pages as if considering methods such as grilling or simmering. Inside, Chiikawa, Hachiware, Usagi, and Ode compare that movement with their own confinement. Because Goblin reads the book before the captured figures with gestures like preparing food, it feels more ominous than ordinary guarding. The scene does not decide what will actually be made or for whom, but the imprisoned group can only watch Goblin's book and work from inside. The tension comes from a familiar act of cooking looking threatening to those behind bars.

When Chiikawa, Hachiware, Usagi, and Ode in striped prisoner uniforms are put in a cell, a green figure slides a meal through the bars. On the metal tray with dividers are mashed potatoes, green leaves, boiled beans, and water. Hachiware is delighted that it is a tray, Chiikawa inadvertently lets out a sound, and near Usagi, a voice says it looks delicious. Hachiware says the mushy texture of the potatoes is tasty, continuing that they also liked the boiled beans and grass. On the other hand, Ode complains that it is not enough. Finally, Hachiware says eating from a tray makes it taste really good, and Chiikawa nods to end it.

Outside the prison, a figure considers a cookbook as if choosing how to prepare food by grilling or simmering it. Inside, Chiikawa and Hachiware worry over the sounds and handling of the book, while Ode watches what is happening outside. The figure has the appearance or tools of someone preparing a meal, but the captured side cannot tell what is intended to be cooked. The turning pages and hand movements create more unease than any detailed explanation. Chiikawa and Hachiware cannot immediately resist, and even Ode's presence does not make the prison safe as they wait through the tension of preparation outside.

They remain imprisoned, but for the duration of sharing food, the four take on the shape of sitting around the same table. The scene leaves open whether this is kindness or intent.

The passage Usagi makes is too small for Ode's body, so the four cannot all leave in the same way. As the three try to proceed, Goblin outside notice Ode appearing from the hole. An escape plan meant to avoid discovery is immediately put at risk by Ode's size and the presence of guards, bringing hope and exposure together at the start of the escape.

Before the completed small escape route, Usagi, Hachiware, and Chiikawa prepare to leave one by one. Ode understands that their body cannot fit through the hole, yet urges the three to go on. Their number tags remain attached even as they flee, carrying the mark from the prison with them. With Goblin nearby, Ode tells them not to worry about Ode and to escape quickly, leaving the three torn. The physical difference that prevents Ode from passing through forces the separation: the hopeful passage lets only the three out while Ode remains before Goblin, turning completion into an urgent divide rather than a simple victory.

Outside the escape route, Ode stands as if taking on Goblin and spreads their arms to urge the other three onward. Chiikawa, Hachiware, and Usagi remain by the small passage, unable to immediately leave Ode behind. Using their large body to hold or carry Goblin, Ode tries to make time for the three to run. Hachiware shows a wish to escape together, but the difference in size that determines who can fit through the hole does not change. This is not a fight to win, but the act of someone who cannot pass through staying behind to make time, sharply contrasting the three's hesitation with Ode accepting that role.

After leaving the prison, Usagi, Chiikawa, and Hachiware run through grassland as Ode behind them urges them to flee far away. Ode remains in their large form and seems to show the three gratitude. Rather than stopping in relief, they keep moving because of the danger of pursuit. Hachiware asks where they should go, and Usagi and Chiikawa look around. They spot a round object like a metal lid in the grass but do not yet know what it leads into. The loneliness of leaving Ode behind and the unease of finding the next clue while fleeing overlap on the same path.

Chiikawa, Hachiware, and Usagi are stuffing their cheeks with rice balls. Hachiware laughs, noting that they are eating it as if drinking it, and worries if their stomach will be surprised. As ingredients appear from the bitten rice ball, Hachiware raises their voice that there is a meatball inside and is delighted that it goes well with rice. Chiikawa nods, and Usagi raises their own rice ball and responds with "Yaha," and Hachiware asks if it was in there too. The scene changes, and a large one-eyed figure is also blankly holding a rice ball with the same meatball inside. Finally, Chiikawa and Hachiware briefly worry about whether that figure will be okay.

From behind a tree, Chiikawa, Hachiware, and Usagi look toward the place they had been before and find a sheet of paper like a letter on the ground. Hachiware opens it and reads it as a message to everyone about Ode. It mentions such things as coming again, companions, and the place where someone was found, but the image does not fill in the whole situation from those fragments. By reading it, the three take in that their relationship with Ode has not ended after leaving the prison. Ode's large figure appears in the distance, and Hachiware thinks they may meet again while clearly unable to hide the wish to do so.

In the forest, Momonga stops, smells a large mushroom, and is impressed by how very good it smells. They take a bite right then and there, moving their mouth while savoring it with shining eyes, thinking it is amazing. From a path a little further away, the sound of Ode running with Goblins approaches, and Momonga turns around. Ode runs in and raises a fist, shouting at the top of their lungs not to eat the mushroom, but by that time Momonga is already rolling on the ground, their eyes losing focus. Behind them, Chiikawa, Hachiware, and Usagi raise their voices slightly as they watch, and it ends there.
