How to Read the Chiikawa Manga in Order: Three Routes—Chronological, Arc, and Volume Order

If you want to read the Chiikawa manga from the very beginning, publication order—following the original posts from oldest to newest—is recommended. You read both short single-panel pieces and long-form stories in the flow they were released, so everyday life and incidents stay connected. If you want to reach the long-form stories quickly, choose arc order; if you want to settle in with books, go by volume order starting from volume 1.

There is no ranking among the three routes. Publication order suits people who want to catch even the smallest detours, arc order suits those who want to read a self-contained story straight through, and volume order suits those who want to take their time turning pages. Note that "chronological" here means the order in which the original posts were published, not a rearranged order of in-story events. The chronological (publication order) route: starting from the oldest posts

In publication order, you start at the older end of the post list and move to the next publication date after finishing each one. Among the older collected posts is the one published on September 14, 2017, in which nagano's bear eats until the plate is empty and wants to crawl into bed still full. In the single-panel piece from October 12, 2017, Chiikawa buries itself in a cream puff nearly as big as its own body and eats it, gets its cream-covered body washed, and falls asleep recalling the events.

In publication order, the sequence of publication dates itself serves as a guidepost. The September post shows the satisfaction of emptying a plate and drink flowing straight into sleep, while in the October piece, Chiikawa cries over both its cream-covered body and the disappearing cream puff. The arc-order route: reading long-form stories in story order

In "Weeding Certification, Again" in tankobon volume 2, when Hachiware spots Chiikawa at the venue and tries to ask how the exam felt, Momonga answers first. Hachiware is puzzled by the reply that the results are not yet known, and Chiikawa stays silent with a complicated look. Momonga's own result also remains unclear. While waiting for the announcement, there is a small break where they draw a picture of a rice bowl with a stone that draws good lines, and an invitation to eat it together again.

The night before the announcement, Hachiware cannot sleep even though the exam was not their own, and wishes for a pass toward the moon outside the cave. On the day itself, they ride a sunfish off to another place, then rush back breathless to the venue as everyone around starts heading home. Even after apologizing repeatedly and asking about the result, Chiikawa does not answer right away. Chiikawa smiles twice before delivering the failing result, and the two are at a loss for words—but afterward they line up at a noodle shop, and Hachiware calls out that they will cheer Chiikawa on as many times as it takes.

Rather than picking up only the results announcement, reading straight through the stone play while waiting, the sleepless night, the reason for being late, and the meal leaves you with the relationship between the two, who keep eating side by side, rather than a flashy success.

The tankobon route: reading the volumes in order from volume 1

Tankobon readers proceed in numerical order from volume 1. TheWeeding Certification Arc, whose collected volume can be confirmed, is in volume 2, and while waiting for the results, there is also a scene where Chiikawa and Hachiware draw pictures on the ground and imagine their next meal. When Chiikawa draws a rice bowl, Hachiware recalls the time they ate one together and invites Chiikawa to go again. Even the detours that fall in the middle of waiting for the results can be read within the flow of the same chapter. This entry point suits those who would rather read straight through each volume than hunt down the publication date of each episode.

When Hachiware asks what will happen to the other world if the insect is crushed, the tree deflects the question. Hachiware, insisting that this world has its good points too, resolves to return to the original world, and chases the insect with the claws of a body they have begun to adapt to. They alert those around them to the possibility of returning and dash toward the light, and after getting back, they check Chiikawa's ears and their memories of the Weeding Level 5 celebration. To follow it as one long-form story, the arc list, which lets you read straight from the wavering to the post-return confirmation, is the shortest path.

In publication order, not only the continuation of the tension but also single-panel pieces from other days enter the same timeline. After the post where the returned Hachiware checks Chiikawa's ears and memories come a piece explaining that the lines on the face are whiskers on the cheek side rather than a mustache, an okaki application entry, a meal episode with yakisoba and white rice where Kurimanju adds takoyaki on the side, and Chiikawa in a cherry blossom fairy outfit.

Arc order lets you focus on Hachiware's wavering and decision, while publication order also picks up the meals and seasonal single-panel pieces sandwiched before and after. Once you finish a long-form story, you can go back to the posts from the same period. Next to the afterglow of tension, the breathing room where takoyaki and cherry blossoms sit as if nothing happened is irresistible.

Fan interpretation: the route of entering from the anime or movie into the original manga

Among Japanese fans on X, some say that when buying the comics after seeing the movie, they hesitate over whether to start from volume 8, thought to correspond to the film, or to read in order from the beginning. Another fan suggests reading volume 8's Siren Arc before the movie, citing it as an entry point for checking in advance the story that caught their attention in the film. These are all personal suggestions, not an officially designated order.

For those who want to expand to the whole work, one fan's notes suggest entering from the start of volume 1, proceeding through Momonga and Dekatsuyo, Momonga and Furuhonya, and the Parallel World, then choosing the Pajama Parties, Chiikabu (Beetle) Arc, and Black Meteor Arc. On the other hand, there are also voices saying they could not tell where manga chapter 1 was and started with the anime, and others recommending tracing back the official X account, so no single entry point is settled.
